A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
